Hello, my name is Simon Muir. I am a practicing Counsellor covering the Scarborough, Whitby and Ryedale areas of North Yorkshire. My approach to Counselling is through Solution Focused Brief Therapy ( SFBT ). Please read the information below to see if this intervention and approach is the right one for you.

Living in the the modern world

It seems as though the demands we place upon ourselves in this modern society has increased, each day we read about the pressures people face aswell as the increase in people suffering from mental health problems such as anxiety and depression. It would appear that these trends are set to continue.

In this society we are still  working long hours, coping with the fragility of the economy and the so called 'credit crunch' which has caused a great deal of job insecurity, on top of this we are having to live with increased pollution and serious environmental issues.

Our obsession with technology and information further contribute to pressure and stress as we strive to keep ourselves updated.   Changes in the way we now communicate can also be related to increased instability in family life and an overall decrease with more traditional and meaningful leisure and social passtimes.

So what is Brief Therapy?

Brief Therapy is a type of counselling which is time limted. The number of sessions normally range from 6 - 12, beyond that counselling would be classed as long term. It is a fairly modern approach to counselling and one that can have great success for an individual.

Within brief therapy the client is encouarged to assess their problem or difficulty and in partnership with the counsellor agree focused short term goals and actions which can help the individual deal with and resolve their problems therefore helping the person to move on effectively.

Although the counselling is brief there maybe a need to revisit the therapy as it is accepted that relapses do occur.

The benefits of brief therapy is that solutions can be found quickly as opposed to long and arduous counselling and psychological interventions that have existed in the past. The counsellor helps the client look at their current situation and circumstances. Due to the length of the therapy the counselling is not a costly process and is unlilkely to disrupt a person's day to day life.
